Rock Star Drama: Josh Freese's Exit from Foo Fighters and His Life After!
Hey music fans! Get ready for the inside scoop on a major rock 'n' roll shake-up. Josh Freese, the drumming legend who was part of Foo Fighters for a couple of whirlwind years, has some things to say about his surprise exit from the band. But he's keeping most of it on the down-low... for now.
In an exclusive chat with Modern Drummer, Freese dished about how he joined Foo Fighters in 2023, stepping in after the tragic passing of Taylor Hawkins. He rocked out on their album But Here We Are and was on fire, playing shows in London and LA. But then, like a plot twist no one saw coming, May 2025 rolls around, and the band decides to switch things up.
So what really happened? Freese hinted at some theories, but he's tight-lipped, saying, "In such a big band, anything I say ends up getting blown out of proportion! I've definitely got a lot on my mind about it." Despite the abrupt ending, he has nothing but good vibes about his bandmates: "Dave Grohl and the guys were awesome – until they weren't."
Freese even shared the jaw-dropping moment he learned about the split. He was hanging out with pals from A Perfect Circle and Primus when the shocker dropped, leaving everyone going, "What just happened?" Next up for Foo Fighters, they welcomed Ilan Rubin, who jumped into the spotlight on their single "Asking For A Friend."
But it's not all doom and gloom for Freese! He's back at it, hitting the stage with Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle, jamming with Weezer, and rocking studio sessions with music icons like Danny Elfman and Billy Idol.
When someone said, "Man, you've had a tough year," Freese brushed it off like a pro, saying, "The Foo Fighters thing? Just a blip! I'm right where I belong: rocking and rolling with amazing artists." He wants everyone to know: there's no need for any sympathy. Freese is smashing it on his own terms!
