Hey rock fans, we've got some deeply sad news today: Fred Smith, the amazing bass player from the revolutionary rock band Television, has left us at the age of 77. His bandmates confirmed the news on social media, expressing how he bravely fought an illness for years.
Fred's incredible journey in rock history began with his spot as the original bassist for Angel and the Snake, the band that would soon become the iconic Blondie. In 1975, he made a bold move to join Television, stepping in for Richard Hell. Fred's skillful basslines became the backbone of Television's legendary albums like Marquee Moon and Adventure.
After Television split in 1978, Fred's musical journey didn't stop. He rocked the bass on solo albums for both Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd and collaborated with artists like the Roches, Willie Nile, Peregrins, and the Revelons. When Television reunited in 1992, Fred was right there, continuing to deliver unforgettable performances through the 2000s.
Fred's bandmate and friend, Jimmy Rip, shared touching words in memory of Fred: “He wasn’t just my bandmate for 46 years - Fred was my true friend. On the road, his sense of humor was as masterful as his bass playing: dry, subtle, and straight to the point.”
Fred was a true artist, and if anyone loved melodic bass lines, Fred's work was a masterclass. He crafted his music flawlessly - always serving the song, never flashy, yet undeniably essential.
Jimmy Rip and Fred had plans to revamp music by Tom Verlaine, who also passed away this year, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Thankfully, they had a chance to say goodbye, with “love you” being their last words.
As the rock world mourns, Fred leaves behind a legacy full of unforgettable music and memories. Rest in peace, Fred. We will miss you more than words can express. 🤘🎸
